Jim McCann
Commander - Marines

 

Jim McCann is a proud U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran, having served from 1966 to 1968 with the Special Landing Force, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. During his service, Jim was involved in the first battle of Khe Sanh on Hills 861 and 881 North, Cam Lo, and was stationed at Camp Carroll near the DMV in the "Iron Triangle." He was awarded three Purple Hearts, a Navy Commendation Medal with the "V" device for valor, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Additionally, he received three New York State Conspicuous Service Medals for his bravery and dedication.

Jim was born at Mitchell Field Air Base in Uniondale, NY, while his father was called to serve in the Korean War. He was raised in Huntington, NY. A Life Member of VFW Post 4927 for over twenty years, Jim was installed as the post's Commander in April 2023. In this role, he focuses on expanding membership and fostering social engagement among veterans. His leadership is centered around building a stronger community and ensuring that veterans remain connected and supported.

Jim's military service is part of a distinguished family legacy. His father served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was captured as a German Prisoner of War after his plane was shot down behind enemy lines. This family history of service and sacrifice has shaped Jim’s dedication to honoring veterans and supporting their communities.

Beyond his role at VFW Post 4927, Jim is actively involved with several other veteran and community organizations. He is a past commander of his Marine Corps League, is currently listed as president of the 3rd Marine Division New York State Chapter, and is a member of the Ronkonkoma AmVets Post, where he previously served on their Board of Trustees. Jim is also a member of the Loyal Order of the Purple Heart and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), continuing his commitment to supporting fellow veterans and their communities. He also engages with the American Legion and Moose Lodge.

Jim is the proud father of one daughter and grandfather to one grandson, cherishing his family and their connection to the legacy of military service.
