John Holdorf was born and raised in Huntington, NY. After graduating from John Glenn High School in 1965, he began working for the Town of Huntington Maintenance Department. In 1966, he took a leave of absence to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he continued his training at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton, and Okinawa before deploying to Vietnam.

From 1967 to 1968, John served in Vietnam, where he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Upon returning home, he resumed his job with the Town of Huntington and eventually rose to the position of General Foreman of the Trades.

John first joined VFW Post 1469 in Huntington Station, NY, in the late 1970s. After moving to Centereach with his wife and children in 1985, he transferred to VFW Post 4927, where he has been an active and dedicated member. Over the years, he has formed lasting friendships and a strong camaraderie with fellow members. He has proudly represented the post as a member of the Honor Guard, as well as serving in leadership roles, including Junior Vice Commander and Senior Vice Commander. In recognition of his dedication, he was honored as "Man of the Year" in 2017-2018.

John is a proud life member of both VFW Post 4927 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). His involvement in the VFW has been an important part of his life, and he is honored to be part of such a proud and committed group of comrades.
