Nelson Lopez served in the U.S. Navy from 1985 to 1991 as a Fire Controlman Second Class (SW). He was assigned to the USS Biddle (CG-34), where his primary responsibility was the maintenance and repair of the ship’s surface-to-air missile system.
During Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, Nelson served as a member of the ship’s boarding party and took part in every boarding operation the Biddle conducted. The cruiser played a key role in enforcing sanctions in the Red Sea, ultimately boarding more than 30 merchant vessels and diverting many for further inspection — the highest diversion rate of any coalition warship during the conflict. The Biddle also distinguished herself as the only U.S. warship to seize a merchant vessel during the Gulf War, a mission in which Nelson directly participated. For his service and dedication, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal.
After completing his naval service, Nelson continued his commitment to public service with a 27-year career as a police officer with the Suffolk County Police Department.
Nelson is married to his wife, Kathleen, and together they have three children: Nicholas, Jake, and Sarah. Their son Jake is currently a college senior in Air Force ROTC and will commission in May 2026.
Today, Nelson is proud to serve as an officer of his local VFW Post, where he continues his lifelong commitment to camaraderie, service, and supporting his fellow veterans.
